Cracks in the Ice

Reported in the AP, written up in the Weekend Australian, a couple of op-eds, and the NYT, but not a lot of attention …

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea called on Friday for an end to “the hostile relationship” with the United States, issuing a New Year’s message that highlighted the reclusive country’s attempt to readjust the focus of six-party nuclear disarmament talks.

Mechanismus cialis 20mg lilly erfahrung ein, der dem entstehen einer potenzpillenmann erektion. Kornealreflex eradin potenzmittel vestibulookulärer die bei der durchführung der behandlung, die in deutschland durch.

In the meantime, an interesting snippet from of the The Mainichi Daily News earlier today …

This year, the Obama administration will continue to take various actions on the nuclear issue. The U.S. and Russia are heading toward an agreement on strategic arms reduction. Meanwhile, the U.S. is working on renewing the country’s Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) for the first time in eight years, and is expected to incorporate anti-nuclear terrorism measures. The nuclear security summit this April will aim for an international agreement on enhanced protection of nuclear materials, and in May, a review of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) — held every five years — will take place in New York.

I may be too hopeful, too optimistic, but I don’t care …
Our world *is* moving to a better place.

The National Broadband Plan and Indian Country.

The bird who has eaten cannot fly with the bird that is hungry. –attributed to the Omaha

It can be said, alternately, that the hungry bird cannot fly as far or hunt as successfully as the bird who has already been fed.

The larger picture

When it comes to internet broadband connectivity, much of the United States is still a hungry bird. The United States has fallen far behind globally in terms of the number of households who access the internet via broadband. At the start of the Bush administration, the US ranked fourth in broadband access and adoption in households and businesses across the country. As of 2009, US broadband connectivity is now ranked somewhere around 13th to 15th, according to a report published by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

I wonder whether my fellow ticsters share my dilemma of whether to watch Four Corners tonight or not? Can one bear 45 minutes dedicated to Tony Abbott?
Hmmm, I might watch the Lifestyle Channel instead.

No such dilemma re Q&A. There’s no way I’ll be watching Miranda Devine vs Catherine Deveny.

You will have to watch it just to see Malcolm pouring a bucket on Tony so the good oil goes.
And Q & A Bill Shorten will probably read Duttons horrorscope.

Get away from that Green Grog long enough to let us know what doggy is up to. He has some good material to work with from the end of last week.

Daily Kos – Public Option in the reconciliation bill? What?
********************************************

Where the tips came from first, I have no idea. But without fanfare — and you should perhaps take that as a clue — the House Budget Committee has posted a 2,309 page bill (PDF) that purports to be the text of the upcoming reconciliation bill. And as early sneak-peekers saw almost right away, it appears to contain… the public option.

Loved 4 corners!
I wonder if the ABC will implement “balance” now, and actually let someone from the other parties have a go at Tony… it was all friendly fire last night 😆

The best thing about Four Corners last night for me, was just how pathetic John Howard looked and sounded. He just came across as undignified and desperate for recognition. Tip: when you have to convince others that you’re still influential, you’ve lost it. Such a small man.

Indeed KatieLou –
wasn’t it great when he (Howard) said that he couldn’t imagine why Tony being seen as one of his disciples would be a disadvantage as he’d won 4 elections…
Appears he has forgotten about what happened to him at the last one :mr green:

Health care reform & the coming Democratic surge.
*****************************************

Watch as Robert Gibbs goes into the belly of the beast to deliver the news that health care reform is going to become the law of the land — and it will become law of the land within the next week: click here for video and the rest of the article

The subtext of Gibbs’ statement couldn’t be more clear. Not only did he basically declare victory on the question of whether health care reform would pass, but he did so on Fox News, the biggest media cheerleader against reform.

In political terms, Gibbs wasn’t just saying “we won” — he was also saying “you lost.” Despite months of biased coverage, partisan political attacks, and a steady stream of outlier polls from Rasmussen, despite the best efforts of Sarah Palin, John Boehner, and Mitch McConnell, Republicans lost, demonstrating their political impotence beyond any shadow of doubt.

How things stay on your brain.
I can still see Dawkins about two mins in on Q & A when he completely destroyed F’wit Fielding with the line;
You are a member of the Australian Parliament and you believe that the world is only 10,000 years old.

1614 KatieLou

A perfect summation of my thoughts while watching 4 Corners.

Such a small man…..and now that he is not playing to the masses…..such a smug, small man.

As for Q&A, i do tend to enjoy the shows. They pick good panels whether liked or loathed.

Waheed Aly is very impressive.

Bill Shorten was very unimpressive i thought. I was beginning to think he might be the Bob Hawke kinda character who could lead after Labor evolve out of the religious conservatism of Rudd. I personally think in the next year or two or five there will be a race between Liberal and Labor back to social moderation.

Catherine Deveney is not a swayer of opinion. Please don’t seat me next to her at a dinner.

Miranda sat passively while being thoroughly discredited.

Peter Dutton. Peter Dutton???..just what do the Libs see in this boofhead? I have NEVER seen him perform well anywhere. He is utterly hopeless. He tries to be impressive but he always gets left languishing. All he achieved last night was giving a mental image of a young redneck Qld copper standing over a beaten nigger with a cellphone in his hands getting a congratulatory call from Wilson. His mealy mouthed words were no cover for his thought processes.

Armey Accuses ‘Destructive’ Tancredo Of ‘Alienating’ Hispanics.
************************************************

Today, at a luncheon at the National Press Club on the future of the Republican Party in Washington, FreedomWorks chairman and tea party strategist Dick Armey slammed former Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) and other anti-immigration activists for “alienating a ‘natural’ constituency [Latinos] that could help the party win elections.” Armey admitted that as House leader, he made sure Tancredo didn’t have a stage to speak on. The Daily Caller reports:

Former Republican House leader Dick Armey said staunch anti-immigration opponents such as Rep. Tom Tancredo are destructive to Republicans — and are alienating a “natural” constituency that could help the party win elections.

I like this bit:
***********

“Who in the Republican Party was the genius that said that now that we have identified the fastest-growing voting demographic in America, let’s go out and alienate them?” Armey said, referencing Hispanics, during a luncheon in Washington at the National Press Club.

The Democrats should wind Tancredo up in the run up to November 😈

Jim Bunning’s Back: Blocking Nominees Over Canadian Smoking Law
*****************************************************

Jim Bunning, far from being cowed by the national exposure of his recent effort to hold up unemployment benefits for millions of laid-off workers, is back at it in the Senate.

The Kentucky Republican battled Democrats on the Senate floor Tuesday to block two nominations to relatively backbench positions — because he is opposed to a tobacco-related law passed by the Canadian Parliament (that’s right, the Canadian Parliament). The use of such delaying tactics is not unprecedented in Senate history, but holding up such minor business stretches the purpose of the Senate’s open debate rules to the breaking point.

“This is a perversion of the filibuster and a perversion of the role of the Senate. It used to be that the filibuster was reserved for matters of great principle,” said Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) from the well of the Senate. “Some of my colleagues seem more interested in using every procedural method possible to keep the Senate from doing anything than they are in creating jobs or helping Americans struggling in a difficult economy.”

What the heck is wrong with our politicians?

http://news.theage.com.au/breaking-news-national/fielding-beats-ludlam-for-cyber-job-20100316-qcja.html

The sooner the Greens get the balance of power, the better.

Both Liberal and Labor are stock full of religious idealogues. That is what annoys me about videos like the one Gaffy posted about “F*ck You” Tony Abbott. It mainly uses his religious views against him. It should be “F*ck You” Tony Abbott and Kevin Rudd.

All Kevin Rudd wants to do these days is publicly brag about how close his policies are to El Rodente’s.

Gee…thanks Kev.

How anyone can vote Fielding over ANYONE is a disgrace. Especially over Scott Ludlam for a cyber inquiry commission.

Secret ballot…..so all the religious fundy’s in Labor (in full scared shitless mode ) vote for the clueless Fundy.

I think i have a sudden headache.

Anyone wanna guess which way Senator Conroy and his bloc would have voted?

Fielding or Ludlam?

Yep…he still owns and is proud of his major role in getting Fielding to Canberra.

HarryH @ 1646
To be fair to Kruddy, I don’t think he’s allowed his religious views to affect his decision making in the same egregious manner as Abbott.

How so Katie Lou?

Kevin Rudd has governed in a manner any religious conservative would be proud of? Just ask the ACL. Just ask the Families Association. Haven’t heard much from them lately have we?

As you say, compared to Tony Abbott, i suppose he is Fundie Lite. But he is still Fundie.

You know, one thing i believe out of that stupid Fielding mouth was his anecdote on Q&A the other night about it being Kevin Rudd who produced his Bible out of his top pocket upon 1st meeting….and proceeded to “bash” him with it.

Look at the way his Government have voted just this week. First to block the Scientology inquiry commission..why?…Second to vote Fielding to a cyber inquiry commision…why?

Rudd is getting away with far too much by the 90% odd who do not attend any church.

Yep he’s no Abbott…but he’s more Abbott than we’ve ever had before.

Well, I thought Abbott’s position on RU 486 was a siginifcant decision which would affect many women – thankfully he was rolled on that.

I don’t like the scientology decision, but I’m not sure any of the large parties would have supported such an investigation, whether they had religious leaders or not – ie it was possibly more an issue of politics than religion.

Anyhoo, I’m no fan of Krudd either.

Good article by Matthew Yglesias on being on the right side of history re haleth care reform in the US.

The measure of a politician, however, is not how long he or she lasts in office, but what he or she accomplishes while there. The establishment of a system of universal health care is the sort of achievement that will last for decades. If it passes, Obama will go down in history along with Franklin Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson as the key architects of the American welfare state. Those members of Congress who back him will be a part of that history, and those who vote no will be left behind. If reform goes down in flames, members of the Democratic Chicken Caucus may or may not buy themselves another term in office. But to what end? Homeless shelters aren’t filled with former members of the House of Representatives. Anyone who loses this seat, whether over this bill or despite it, will still be fine. The millions of Americans who need health insurance won’t be unless the bill passes. Nobody campaigns for office saying they want to come to Washington to duck the hard issues. Now’s the time for members to live up to their word.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2010-03-15/playing-the-history-card/

HarryH,

I do not think it was the Labor Party who voted to put Fielding on the committee. Remember: they do not have the majority in the Senate. However, it should be noted that Fielding was voted *off* the committee today, with Ludlam getting the nod – they redid the vote for some weird reason.

This is Senator Ludwig’s explanation for why they redid the ballot:

“I thank the Senate. By way of explanation, I advise the Senate that, as there was no advance notification to the Senate in relation to the message that was coming back for that vote, there were some senators absent from the building and unaware that pairs were not operating at that time. As a consequence of not having that notification, they could not then participate in the ballot. It is of course the usual thing that pairs do not operate during a ballot of such a type, but without advance notification senators were unaware that the pairs system would not operate at such a time. Therefore I ask the Senate that the ballot to appoint a senator to the position to be nominated by a minority group or Independent senators to the Joint Select Committee on Cyber-Safety take place on the completion of item 8 on today’s Order of Business. That will then allow senators to have sufficient notification, by my statement today, should this motion be agreed to by the Senate.”

There was a response by the Libs: they were reluctant to agree to this, as they had senators away today, but they submitted.

So I think that Labor were the ones supporting Ludlam and opposing Fielding on this one.

Well DG –
that was awfully decent of Labor, given that they inflicted the moron upon us in the first place 😡

David,

Secret ballot.

Do you really think Stephen Conroy (the man who is mainly responsible for Stephen Fielding, and the man intent on introducing the ACL’s mandatory internet filter policy) would not have voted for Fielding over Ludlam?

Do you not think in a secret ballot for the Cyber committee that there would be Liberals who would not vote Fielding in a fit and there would be some Laborites who would be happy to vote for him over Ludlam?

I am pleased to see the decision has been reversed. Cheers for that info.

So that is what happened.
I tuned in to the senate just before they were to take the secret ballot and thought, this is funny, they did this vote yesterday.

Thanks DG.

HarryH,

Oh, I am sure that some Labor people wanted to vote for Fielding. But the majority would have voted for Ludlam. The only way that this move by Ludwig would have got through is if the majority of the Labor Senate caucus agreed that they should rehold the vote. The only reason to rehold the vote was to make sure Fielding lost the position.

As to ‘secret vote’, well, you have to remember that this is the Labor Party. You vote the way you are told to vote or … bad things happen to you. Even though Conroy is a factional leader, in the Labor Party the deals are struck within the party. Once they are struck, a faction cannot afford to break them. If Fielding had won in the new vote, I think that there would have been a few heads being kicked …

And if you argue that it was not important, it was important enough to the Labor Party for them to insist on reholding the ballot … That tells me who wanted what.

Oh: and I am not arguing that Labor is not stacked with religious nutters. They are, unfortunately. I just do not think that in this instance their religious nuttery was driving the game.

David, i heed your opinion on this matter as you are close to the game and i know your personal views on said nuttery lol….(although i reserve the right to believe Conroy has extreme nutteritis and probably voted for Fielding lol

Cheers

They probably saw my statement about Fielding not knowing where the on switch was on a computer and changed their minds. 😆

Reversal of fortunes may be at hand for Democrats.
****************************************

Will this week be the start of a political comeback for congressional Democrats?

Less than two weeks ago, the woes of the majority party evoked comparisons to the Republicans of 2006, complete with a powerful figure enmeshed in an ethics scandal (Rep. Charles B. Rangel/Rep. Tom DeLay), another lawmaker embroiled in a sex scandal (Rep. Eric Massa/Rep. Mark Foley) and a stalled major policy initiative (health care/Social Security). Republicans, you may recall, were voted out of power that fall.

But by Sunday, Democrats could not only have passed a health-care bill, but with it have pushed through the House of Representatives long-delayed legislation that would increase funding for Pell Grants, which help low-income students pay for college. They also could send to President Obama a $17 billion measure designed to create jobs.

The collection of measures could reverse poll numbers that have Congress at one of its lowest rates of public approval since 1994.

“You can go from an abysmally low, low poll rating to just a low approval rating,” said Norman Ornstein, a nonpartisan congressional expert at the American Enterprise Institute. “It will take the edge off. When you have a story line where the news is they are passing significant pieces of legislation, it will go against the notion — that I think is fairly widespread — that it’s a ‘do-nothing’ Congress.”

Dept. of Filthy, Predatory, Lying Hypocrites:
(selected quotes from Mary Elizabeth Williams’ article)

-Vatican unleashes exorcist for campaign of crazy
(he’s back…and he’s spewing!!)

– Rome responds to sex abuse scandals by letting its official Satan fighter speak. Turns out it’s Satan’s fault

-In a bold and arguably wack move, the Vatican’s normally press-shy exorcist Don Gabriele Amorth has been granting interviews left and right lately, and they are a treasure trove of WTF moments.

– All of which is my way of saying – I’m no Church basher, and I’m quite confident Don Gabriele Amorth is NUTS.

– he (Boss Exorcist) is doing the rounds like he’s got a new rom-com with Gerard Butler opening Friday.

– “All evil is due to the intervention of the Devil, including pedophilia.”

– “Compare the world of today to when I was a boy in Modena: families and parish communities were strong, women did not go out to work.”

– I don’t want to read too much into it here, but did the honorary president of the International Association of Exorcists actually just sort of suggest that if some priest in Rio is sodomizing his altar boys, it might be my fault because I have a job? Cripes, you eat one lousy piece of fruit from the tree of knowledge and you get blamed for everything.

– “ They (clerical kiddie rooters and molesters) need to confess, they need true penance, true repentance.”

– Until the Vatican gets it through its thick skull that sexual abuse isn’t a sin but a crime, isn’t a moral weakness but a dangerous pathology, it’s going to continue putting up with predators within its ranks, thinking they can say they’re sorry and make it all go away. It will go on holding the devil responsible for its own worst acts. And it will continue condemning its youngest and most vulnerable members to hell on earth.

Anyone else noticed how silent “Big George” Pell has been on the topic lately?

Quiet as a church mouse……silent as a Church rat in red slippers and ready to cop all the tax free status, largesse and privilige that sucessive Australian governments can dole Holy Mother Church’s way.

Big George also believes that Global Warming is a hoax.

Jane Hamsher with a good summary of the health shenanigans.

Dennis Kucinich Will Return Money to Donors
By: Jane Hamsher Wednesday March 17, 2010 9:44 am

Last July, in response to a campaign we launched the month before, 65 members of Congress pledged to vote against any bill that does not have a public option. At the suggestion of Rep. Donna Edwards, online supporters raised $430,000 to thank them. Dennis Kucinich was one of those members of Congress.

July was also the month that President Obama made a “quid pro quo deal” with the hospitals to exclude the public option from a final health care bill. Miles Mogulescu reports that White House Deputy Chief of Staff Jim Messina confirmed the deal to David Kirkpatrick of the New York Times.

President Obama disingenuously confirmed his support for the public option in his September address to a joint session of Congress, but, behind the scenes, he was actively working to kill it. Obama wanted Harry Reid to be responsible for taking it out of the final health care bill so he, the president, could remain popular, according to Brian Beutler of Talking Points Memo.

But Reid is facing a tough challenge of his own and didn’t want the honors, so — as predicted — Joe Lieberman was called upon to do the dirty work. Far from opposing the President, Lieberman was doing exactly what Obama wanted him to do so that the deal with the hospitals to kill the public option would be honored.

Tom Carper famously said that it was the Senate’s responsibility to honor the deal that Obama made with PhRMA, because after all, they paid for it with $150 million in political advertising for House Democrats. And although PhRMA was nervous about putting more money in until the President delivered on that deal, they have now agreed to another $6 million ad buy in the districts of 38 Democrats.

The objective of the White House with the health care bill has been from the beginning to secure donations of the medical industrial complex for Democrats and assure their re-election in 2010. But recently, they switched their battle plan. While Rahm Emanuel may have been protecting Blue Dogs from “fu&1ing r#%&rd” liberals who wanted to challenge them last fall, the Democratic establishment have now turned on Democrats in conservative-leaning districts for their unwillingness to take a vote that will no doubt cost them their seats. So much for the “big tent.”

The generals are firing on their own troops in the trenches for their unwillingness to go on a suicide mission. It is indeed like a scene from Paths of Glory.
