    Senate Elections? I think they are counting more votes in Alaska today, so hopefully some updates later, Mark Begich for the Democrats is currently 814 votes ahead of Ted Stevens.
    Minnesotta – the recount commences next month. The expectation is that if undervotes are counted, Al Franken will win.

    Brussels turns regulatory eye on rating agencies.

    The European Commission has unveiled a proposal to regulate credit rating agencies, boasting the blueprint goes further than legislation anywhere else in the world in its attempt to prevent future turbulence based on false ratings of various market actors.

    “These very exciting rules are necessary to restore the confidence of the market in the ratings business in the European Union,” said EU internal market commissioner Charlie McCreevy when presenting the document to journalists on Wednesday (12 November).

    Commission president José Manuel Barroso says this weekend’s G20 summit in Washington offers a “unique” opportunity for a “deep-seated” reform of the banking sector.

    The Portuguese official told this website that he hoped the meeting of the Group of 20 industrialised and emerging economies would launch a “fundamental” review of the global financial system.

    Barroso said, “It is a very important that there is a revision, not just of the banking sector but of other related issues such as what I call global prosperity, that is, efforts to promote prosperity everywhere.”

    Vote tally trend favors Begich for Senate.

    More than half the absentee and questioned ballots still to be counted in Alaska’s U.S. Senate race come from areas of the state that backed Democrat Mark Begich on Election Day.
    That’s not a good sign for Republican Sen. Ted Stevens as he seeks to overcome Begich’s 814-vote lead when counting resumes today of just over 41,000 remaining ballots. A Daily News analysis, based on data provided by the state Division of Elections, shows that 56 percent of those ballots come from districts that favored Begich on Nov. 4.

    EBay Sites Will Ban Sales of Tickets to Obama’s Swearing-In.

    If you are one of the few to land a ticket to the swearing-in of President-elect Barack Obama, don’t think about hawking it on eBay.
    The online auction site is banning such postings after a U.S. senator said she was crafting a bill to make the sales a federal crime.

    The 240,000 or so tickets, which will be available for free, have not been distributed by members of Congress or the yet-to-be created presidential inaugural committee. But that did not stop people from offering them on eBay and other Web sites, promising they would secure the tickets if they were paid up to $40,000 apiece.

    I just feel so upset about this.

    How bad off is the Republican Party right now? Ask Newt Gingrich.

    “The Republican Party right now is like a midsize college team trying to play in the Superbowl,” Gingrich told me Wednesday. “It is pretty hard to say our losses were because of John McCain’s campaign. McCain performed way above plausibility compared to where the Republican president was in the polls. We have to look honestly at what went wrong.”

    Gingrich, Republican speaker of the House from 1995 to 1999, declined say who he wanted as the next chairman of the party. He said his main concern was the rise of what he called the “modern left,” which just a few years ago was thought to be moribund in this country but now looks alive and kicking.

    Greg Mueller, a political consultant who specializes in conservative candidates, said that the next chairman of the party must be an “ideological conservative.”

    “We need full-throttle conservatism,” Mueller said. “We have governed as lighter versions of liberal Democrats. We went to Washington to be fiscal conservatives and we became profligate spenders and big-government bureaucrats.”

    Mueller went on: “It is very unpopular to be a Republican right now, but it is very popular to be a conservative. The conservative brand is the most popular brand in the country, but we didn’t run as conservatives.”

    Alaska Senate Race on Hold.

    Alaska elections officials will resume counting absentee ballots on Friday in the contest that will determine whether Republican Ted Stevens returns to the Senate.

    Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, the Democratic challenger, held an 814-vote lead after a round of ballot-counting on Wednesday. But his campaign staff, which has been monitoring the vote count, estimated that 40,000 ballots remained to be counted. Some of those were absentee ballots and some were ballots that had been questioned by judges on Election Night and set aside for later review.

    IMO Hillary will “maybe” get a domestic post in the Administration, if not she will stay in the Senate.

    In the meantime, the Whole Clinton Machine will do everything in its remaining power to undermine the Obama Administration.

    Make no mistake, she has her eyes on 2012. That is her sole purpose. If you doubt this , as Giordano points out and i have mentioned previously, you only have to get through your head that Hillary was actively thinking about the Obama assasination nightmare as a way that could save her dream.

    I’ve just been having a look at the status of the senate for 2010. There appears to be about 13 Republicans within striking distance.
    There is a long time to go yet, but it is interesting to get the layout of the land.

    With the calling of the Oregon seat for Jeff Merkley, the Democratic Party looks set for 55 seats in the United States Senate. Along with the two independent seats including Joe Lieberman, that puts the Democratic caucus at 57 seats. All of the seats that were considered to be cinches, Democrats won while the marginal pickups like Minnesota stayed with the incumbent but could potentially switch pending recounts or re-votes. 60 seats to get to that filibuster proof majority was considered to be a long shot in any event but it can be quite attainable in 2010.

Haley Barbour is vice-chairman, while Florida Gov. Charlie Crist will serve as chair for the annual RGA gala, and Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue will head up the recruitment effort.

    Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle, Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas, and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty will also sit on the RGA’s executive committee.

    “Republican Governors are natural leaders who will find solutions to our nation’s challenges and bring back the Party,” Sanford said in a statement.

    While Monsanto is trying to fool anyone who wants to listen about the good qualities of their GM crops in Australia, and our dumb fucken politicians and farmers will go for it, their bullshit style has been noted for what it is:

    Media has devoted attention to the Andrew Weidermann’s GM trials in Australia but has failed to notice that the trials had been manipulated in a series of ways to make the GM-canola look as though it outperformed normal canola.

    Julie Newman, reporting on these trials, asks “Why has there been so much promotion of GM trials but little attention to detail?”

    What details were overlooked? “The non-GM varieties could not perform to their full potential because standard weed control was avoided.”

    I have spent lots of hours on the intertubes reading about What a lovely good corporate citizen Monsanto is. Particularly when that fine upstanding Mr Rumsfeld became their CEO after the repugs lost power way back and he had to find a new job. What a web was weaved by him and Monsanto to get aspartame through the FDA and how the shennanigans were stretched out to so that they were able to invoke the statute of limitations. Mongrels all.

    Begich lead increases in race for Senate.

    Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens is in grave danger of losing re-election after Mark Begich widened his lead to 1,022 votes Friday.
    More than 90 percent of the votes are now counted, and Friday’s count of absentee and questioned ballots could have been Stevens’ best chance to make a comeback.

    We know that history does not repeat, but occasionally likes to rhyme, and the more I read of the Clinton autobiography and compare his presidential victory against Bush the more Obama’s race seems to have strong parallels. In fact you could easily mistake large slabs of Clinton’s speeches in both primary and general campaigns for Obama’s. These are the main Democratic issues, but the similarities of the political landscape and the way the Republicans operated sometimes make me wonder which election I’m reading about.

    The parallels are quite uncanny, even allowing for the irony of an incumbent Bush. But consider that both economies were in recession, (although the current one is off the seismograph), the sitting President had waged war in Iraq, Clinton ran on ‘bringing the nation together’ and health care and education, and Clinton’s demeanor was to rise above the personal attacks which the Republicans launched at him. Bush Snr of course ran the argument that Clinton was a liberal lefty who could not ‘keep us safe’ while he could.

    Even the way Clinton’s campaign used new technology has parallels, and I keep feeling that Obama is the Clinton we wished Clinton had been! Instead of getting bogged down with gays in the military and a long and dreary investigation of his personal peccadilloes, we all feel certain that Obama will be more sure footed, more steady, and probably more able to deliver on his promises.

    643 Kirribilli Removals There seem to be a pattern of governments learning from the previous governments mistakes, two that I can name off the top of my head are Hawky learning from Gough and Bracks learning from Cain. Second time around they are more cautious and are around for a lot longer.

    Obama makes a play for college football playoff.

    It’s not exactly at the top of his agenda, but President-elect Barack Obama says there should be a college football playoff to determine a national champion. In fact, he knows exactly what he wants — an eight-team playoff.

    This may not seem like much, but doing something positive like this can increase his popularity especially amongst white males, which was his weakness in the election.

    76% say Obama can fix economy – poll

    CNN survey shows about three-quarters believe Obama will improve economic conditions and calm markets.
    A poll released Thursday found that a majority of Americans believe that President-elect Barack Obama can fix the economy.

    According to a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll, 76% of Americans said they believe it’s likely that Obama will improve economic conditions.

    In addition, 73% of those surveyed said they believe that Obama will bring stability to the financial markets.
