Cracks in the Ice

Reported in the AP, written up in the Weekend Australian, a couple of op-eds, and the NYT, but not a lot of attention …

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea called on Friday for an end to “the hostile relationship” with the United States, issuing a New Year’s message that highlighted the reclusive country’s attempt to readjust the focus of six-party nuclear disarmament talks.

Mechanismus cialis 20mg lilly erfahrung ein, der dem entstehen einer potenzpillenmann erektion. Kornealreflex eradin potenzmittel vestibulookulärer die bei der durchführung der behandlung, die in deutschland durch.

In the meantime, an interesting snippet from of the The Mainichi Daily News earlier today …

This year, the Obama administration will continue to take various actions on the nuclear issue. The U.S. and Russia are heading toward an agreement on strategic arms reduction. Meanwhile, the U.S. is working on renewing the country’s Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) for the first time in eight years, and is expected to incorporate anti-nuclear terrorism measures. The nuclear security summit this April will aim for an international agreement on enhanced protection of nuclear materials, and in May, a review of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) — held every five years — will take place in New York.

I may be too hopeful, too optimistic, but I don’t care …
Our world *is* moving to a better place.

Online ‘more popular than newspapers’ in US.
*************************************

Online news has become more popular than reading newspapers in the US, according to a survey.

It is the third most popular form of news, behind local and national TV stations, the Pew Research Center said.

“News awareness is becoming an anytime, anywhere, any device activity for those who want to stay informed,” it said.

Newspapers in the US and UK have been going through financial difficulties, leading many to examine charging for their news online.

The survey showed that news aggregators such as Google News and AOL were most commonly used, along with the websites of CNN and the BBC.

I wonder whether this will have any bearing on the November election?

1302 This means that the Southern States are no longer isolated from the rest of America. This may eventually over time, change the way they think and do things. We can only hope.

Nine House Democrats indicated in an Associated Press survey Monday they have not ruled out switching their “no” votes to “yes” on President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul, brightening the party’s hopes in the face of unyielding Republican opposition.

The White House tried to smooth the way for them, showing its own openness to changes in the landmark legislation and making a point of saying the administration is not using parliamentary tricks or loopholes to find the needed support.

A guy on Facebook has a porn clip of a large sized mans penis as his profile image. He has by passed all the Net Nanny’s which detect too much skin coloured pictures, by tinting it blue. It has been on Facebook for a while and not removed. If he can by pass Net Nanny’s and Facebook. What hope has Conroy got?

Standby Ticsters i might be flooding this joint soon. I will be able to find stories faster than Barnyard Joyce can sat trillion.

Ruddster announced the new areas for NBN rollout and i happen to be zoned in, i hope.
The irony of it all is a Telstra sales rep rang me about a month ago and tried to get me to upgrade my broadband plan a bit and sign up for a two year contract. I told him to fuck off and he said why. I said what if it happens that NQ gets rolled out like Tassie with the new NBN and you have just signed me up to a shit program for two years.
Bingo what a fluke. Fuck telstra.

The Federal Government has announced the first sites on mainland Australia where the National Broadband Network (NBN) will be rolled out.

The areas chosen across four states are:

The Melbourne suburb of Brunswick
An area of Townsville covering parts of Aitkenvale and Mundingburra
Minnamurra and Kiama Downs, on the south coast of NSW
Armidale, NSW, including the University of England
Willunga, South Australia

About 3,000 homes and businesses in each town will be part of a trial of the network.

On behalf of all the ticsters Gaffy, can I be the first to say…..
You fucking lucky bastard! 😆
I’ve got a fairly good plan with Internode and I don’t live too far from the exchange to get ADSL.
But I’ve just spent 2 days online trying to sort out something for a friend who lives down on the Mornington peninsular and who’s only hope of a BB connection is wireless.
Bloody hell!! What a rat’s nest of shonks, spivs and thieves with Telscum leading the charge to rip off the unwary.
The NBN can’t come fast enough for most poor bastards in this country.
Let’s hope you’re one of the lucky 3,000. 🙂

Paddy
I am on the exchange for the area so i would assume that i have a 99.9% chance as well as being fairly close to the exchange.
They will have to go past my joint to get to a lot of others.
Having said all that i have never won a pub chook raffle in my life so i better not get too cocksure about the whole thing.
It will be a hoot if it happens though.

That is a good read.
I like to think that the AB friggin C was not biased but for the life of me it doesn’t stack up at all.

They just do not help themselves at the moment. Every news bite and web site article of so called news is a direct take off from somewhere in the MSM. I just can’t see how all the charlaten spruikers like Monkyton and the like are getting so much air time on the AB friggin C.

At the moment the quality of their broadcasting can only go up when they decide to lift themselves out of the sewer and leave ABC Abbott in the sewer. That is his home and he feels good there drinking from its fountain of sordid knowledge.

Where has that imposterJen gone, all quiet now she is a lady or what.

Well Gaffers,
I have been off having my permanent wave and getting fitted for a girdle if you must know – Secret Lady’s Business.
Actually i have been in Melbourne having a Fine Old Time, as the Church of the Latter day Saints would say.
And all the better for it 😈

as for the AB flippin’C : as long as that lovely Janet albrechtson and teh impeccably intelligent mr Windschuttle ar on the board we can only hope yo get even more of the insane delusional flat-earthers determining what is “balance”…
it currently seems to be 95% science vs. 5% (but 50% voting rights) Climate-change denialists and attendant lunatics.
I want my 8 cents back.

Help Bill Halter take on Blanche Lincoln. MoveOn.org
*****************************************

Arkansas Senator Blanche Lincoln is one of the worst Democrats in Washington. But she’s raised enormous sums from corporate interests and has $5 million in the bank—so Lieutenant Governor Bill Halter, who’s challenging her in the Democratic primary, needs overwhelming support from grassroots progressives across the country to wage an effective campaign. Can you make a contribution to Bill Halter’s campaign for Senate today?

(Not that we can in Australia.)
We’ve reached 62% of our NEW goal of $1,000,000! ($621,046.08)
https://pol.moveon.org/give/halter_announce.html?rc=homepage

The message that we keep getting is that the Republicans are motivated. Certainly doesn’t look like a lack of interest in Arkansas on behalf of the Democrats.

Specter Pushes Ahead of Toomey
****************************

A new Quinnipiac poll in Pennsylvania finds Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA) has retaken the lead over challenger Pat Toomey (R) in the U.S. Senate race, 49% to 42%.

In the Democratic primary, Specter is crushing challenger Joe Sestak (D), 53% to 29%.

Said pollster Peter Brown: “Sen. Arlen Specter seems to be having a good winter politically. He is back ahead of Republican Pat Toomey after having been essentially tied with him since last summer, and there remains no evidence that his primary challenger, Congressman Joe Sestak, has made much progress as we get within three months of the May primary.”

Since Arlen has taken a sharp left turn, he’s done pretty well. Just hope he keeps it up after he’s re elected.

Halter Takes On Lincoln, Offers Support For Public Plan
*******************************************

Arkansas Democratic Senate candidate Bill Halter cast himself as a populist anti-Washington crusader on Tuesday, drawing several distinctions with his opponent, Sen. Blanche Lincoln, and downplaying the White House’s endorsement of the incumbent Democrat.

In a wide-ranging interview with the Huffington Post, Halter pledged to run a “positive race with a positive agenda” in his effort to unseat Lincoln — the conservative Arkansas Democrat, whose stonewalling of the Democratic agenda has rankled many in the party. But he wasn’t averse to taking on his primary opponent, pointing out several areas where there are “differences in perspective.”

Accountability Recruits First Candidate for 2010: Bill Halter.
**********************************************

Accountability Now is proud today to announce the first candidate we’ve recruited for the 2010 election: Arkansas Lt. Governor Bill Halter, who will challenge Blanche Lincoln for her Arkansas Senate seat.

Glenn Greenwald and I started Accountability Now in 2008 for the express purpose of recruiting primary challengers who would hold entrenched members of the DC establishment accountable for their actions. Too often incumbents have a stranglehold on their local party machines, and without hope of significant backing the candidates with the political experience to potentially defeat them do not want to risk their careers with a challenge.

Accountability Now

the Political Action Committee set up to challenge corporate-controlled incumbents and hold them accountable for their actions, today announces their first candidate in the 2010 election: Arkansas Lt. Governor Bill Halter, who will challenge Blanche Lincoln for her Senate seat.

“As the head of the Agriculture Committee and a member of the Finance Committee, Blanche Lincoln has stood at the front of the line when it comes to repaying her corporate donors with political favors” says Accountability Now co-founder Jane Hamsher. “Lincoln has personally been the recipient of big ag subsidies, and her continued tenure as Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee would mean the death of sustainable agriculture for a generation. She’s the prime target for an accountability campaign.”

Accountability Now 2009 Year-End Report
********************************

Our recruiting efforts this year have encompassed multiple Congressional districts and, with an eye towards Senate incumbents, even entire states. We have sent our Executive Director to numerous districts around the country to survey the political landscape, meet with local political leaders and activists, interview potential recruits to determine suitability and credibility, and ascertain the receptiveness in that district to challenging the targeted incumbent. In the most promising districts, we have spent weeks physically in the district and months analyzing these races and speaking with potential challengers. We are currently analyzing races and communicating with potential primary challenges from both the Democratic and Republican parties, and from every region of the country, from Tennessee, Arkansas, and Florida to Arizona and Pennsylvania.

Pelosi says she definitely has the numbers for reconcilliation.
Better if they come out and sign up of course.
Love to see them do the public option just before the election and that would give them a good launch pad for the run up.
Republican obstructionists blah blah etc etc.

Starting to look good gaffy. The new enthusiasm it will create can’t be underestimated. Plus the challenge in Arkansas, will make a difference in November.

You have a good one to lay on her straight up. How can you trust anything she says. She voted with her party to introduce a ETS and then resigned from the front bench to vote against it.
Liar liar pants on fire.
Analyse this huge big hypocritical statement which she seems to think justifies her telling the electorate one thing then doing the opposite to score political points rather than doing good for the country.
How she says she will do something like their promise to introduce an ETS and then break their promise then vote down the bill to means test and remove the health care rebate for high income earners, not for the reason that it was not good for the country but merely that it was a supposed broken promise.
You can have a field day with all her garbage.
Print it all up and letterbox drop it. Let her deny it.
She will be instrumental in bringing back workchoices to destroy your childrena nd grandchildrens future employment prospects forcing them in to slave labour. SO Back to the last century.

Bill Halter for Senate MoveOn.org
**************************

Bill Halter is the progressive lieutenant governor of Arkansas. Halter has fought to make sure every child in Arkansas can afford to go to college, has helped organize free clinics to offer health care to people without insurance, and opposed vicious anti-gay ballot measures. But he’ll need our help to overcome Sen. Lincoln and her millions in campaign contributions from corporate interests. Can you chip in? We’ve reached 96% of our NEW goal of $1,000,000! ($963,339.00)

Bill Halter’s Having the Best Week Ever. And It’s Only Tuesday
************************************************

Not to be overly effusive or anything, but damned if the first going-on-48-hours of Bill Halter’s U.S. Senate candidacy hasn’t been downright flawless.

Let’s consider the two solid days of media coverage he’s getting. Let’s consider that slick TV ad he unveils tonight. Let’s marvel at how he spends 15 minutes with the press saying everything and yet nothing about Health Care, Card Check and Cap-n-Trade. See him score the easy points of the day.

Watch as the Lt. Governor nobly completes his filing form in the stone-quiet Capitol Rotunda today, unfettered by crowds — a mere 24 hours after that damnable knot of sweaty politicos, camera lights, dirty bloggers and rowdy voters besieged incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Blanche Lincoln’s march to the starting gate.

Pelosi chooses ‘firebrand’ Pete Stark to replace Rangel. “Speaker Nancy Pelosi has picked liberal firebrand Rep. Pete Stark to replace ousted Chairman Charles Rangel on the tax-writing committee,” The Hill reports.

Stark is next in line for the post in seniority, but his maverick personality had led some to question whether he would get the gavel even on a temporary basis.

The 19-term Democrat has a penchant for making controversial remarks, and when Republicans controlled the House, Stark challenged then Rep. Scott McInnis (R-Colo.) to a fight during a Ways and Means Committee hearing.

Bill Halter Crosses the $5 Million Mark.
*******************************

One of Bill Halter’s big trepidations about running a primary challenge to Blanche Lincoln had to do with her fundraising advantage. Her latest fundraising reports indicate that she has raised $5.5 million, and she has $5.02 million cash on hand.

Two days after his announcement, Halter has nearly matched her haul. Per a press conference with AFSCME’s Gerry McEntee, the unions have committed $4 million to outside expenditures: $1 million each from AFSCME, CWA, SEIU and the Steelworkers. Between MoveOn and the ActBlue fundraising activities of Daily Kos, Accountability Now, DFA, the PCCC and others, there have been $1.16 million in small-dollar online donations made.

Oh geeze! Shock horror! Republicans are going to use fear to raise money. I am so surprised that they would stoop so low!
***************************************************

The Republican National Committee plans to raise money this election cycle through an aggressive campaign capitalizing on “fear” of President Barack Obama and a promise to “save the country from trending toward socialism.”

The strategy was detailed in a confidential party fundraising presentation, obtained by POLITICO, which also outlines how “ego-driven” wealthy donors can be tapped with offers of access and “tchochkes.”

The presentation was delivered by RNC Finance Director Rob Bickhart to top donors and fundraisers at a party retreat in Boca Grande, Florida on February 18, a source at the gathering said.

In neat PowerPoint pages, it lifts the curtain on the often-cynical terms of political marketing, displaying an air of disdain for the party’s donors that is usually confined to the barroom conversations of political operatives.

The presentation explains the Republican fundraising in simple terms.

Richard Burr Hands Election Issue To Opponents, Votes Against Short-Term UI Extension
By: David Dayen Wednesday March 3, 2010 12:35 pm
*****************************************************

Almost more astonishing than the fact that Jim Bunning spent a week blocking a short-term extension of unemployment benefits is the fact that 19 Republican Senators actually voted no on the final bill. Meteor Blades has the list:

Lamar Alexander, John Barasso, Bob Bennett, Jim Bunning, Richard Burr, Tom Coburn, Bob Corker, John Cornyn, Mike Crapo, Jim DeMint, John Ensign, Mike Enzi, Judd Gregg, Orrin Hatch, Mike Johanns, Mitch McConnell, James Risch, Jeff Sessions and John Thune.

As you can see, this includes the Senate Republican leader and its #3 in the leadership, Lamar Alexander. The former head of the Republican campaign arm in the Senate, John Ensign, as well as the CURRENT head, John Cornyn, a guy who said that Bunning’s action did reflect the opinion in the caucus, also joined Bunning.

But I want to zero in on one other vote – North Carolina’s Richard Burr. It’s simply amazing that Burr would gift-wrap this vote for his opponents in a year when he’s facing difficult re-election prospects.

Elaine Marshall, the leading Democratic candidate at the moment, wasted no time in blasting Burr for his vote. “Richard Burr has turned his back on 400,000 unemployed North Carolinians,” she said. “For many of these people and their families, the extension was a lifeline. Senator Burr has shown a disturbing lack of compassion for his fellow citizens. He is clearly out of touch with the people he represents.”

Alan Grayson having a laff in his home district. I like this guy’s fondness for mischief.

Grayson Leading In REPUBLICAN Primary

Republicans like a politician who stands up for what he believes — even if he believes the Republican Party is populated by a bunch of “knuckle-dragging Neanderthals.”

The candidate leading the Florida GOP primary to determine who will take on Rep. Alan Grayson, the Democrat who represents the Orlando-based district, is none other than Grayson himself, according to a poll paid for by his campaign. Grayson is a freshman congressman who has drawn scorn from the GOP and has quickly built a nationwide following of progressives.

The poll has Grayson leading the 13 Republicans — among Republicans — with 27.8 percent of the vote. The congressman who mocked the GOP health care plan by saying that it amounts to telling people not to get sick and if they do, to die quickly, received more support than all of the Republican candidates combined.

The Rise and Fall of a Female Captain Bligh
**********************************

Women are so common in the upper ranks of the U.S. military these days that it’s no longer news when they break through another barrier. Unfortunately, the latest benchmark isn’t one to brag about: being booted as captain of a billion-dollar warship for “cruelty and maltreatment” of her 400-member crew. According to the Navy inspector general’s report that triggered her removal — and the accounts of officers who served with her — Captain Holly Graf was the closest thing the U.S. Navy had to a female Captain Bligh.

A Navy admiral stripped Graf of her command of the Japan-based guided missile cruiser U.S.S. Cowpens in January. The just-released IG report concludes that Graf “repeatedly verbally abused her crew and committed assault” and accuses her of using her position as commander of the Cowpens “for personal gain.” But old Navy hands tell TIME that those charges, substantiated in the IG report, came about because of the poisonous atmosphere she created aboard her ship.

Same reason the MSM here don’t want the facts to get in the way of their cheerleading fiction articles for the fascist liberals here.
They are not game to tell us that Abbott is a real fuckwit.
We already know though.
Anyone who rides into the outback without safety gear and water is definitely a fuckwit of the highest order.
Yes i detest that fascist Abbott.

I have just come across an advertisement for Tasmanian Liberals in Talking Points Memo (it probably won’t stay there). I would have thought that it would be money well wasted in a liberal blog.

Paddy, that ISP filtering survey with the 80% result was a pretty blatant push poll.

You can see the results here:
http://hungrybeast.abc.net.au/sites/default/files/documents/Internet%20Regulation%20Survey%20-%20Report_FINAL.pdf

They start the survey off with this question:

Q1. To begin can you please tell me, in principle, which of the following statements best describes your attitude towards the Government’s role in regulating the Internet?

Which people are then ask to answer in one of two ways:

We need Government regulation of content on the Internet the same as we have Government regulation of content for other media

or

b) Content on the Internet should be free of Government regulation

Then they go to the question which got the 80% response, which was asked in the following manner:

Q2. Would you say you are in favour or not in favour of the following:
a. Having a mandatory Government Internet filter that would automatically block all access in
Australia, to overseas websites containing material that is Refused Classification?

This question followed a definition of ‘refused classification’ material, as follows:
Images and information about one or more of the following:
• child sexual abuse;
• bestiality;
• sexual violence;
• gratuitous, exploitative or offensive sexual fetishes; and
• detailed instructions on or promotion of crime, violence or use of illegal drugs.

I have my suspicions that someone at the ABC was trying to curry a bit of favour with the government, with regards to demonstrating how they can push an agenda in Asia possibly. But who knows. 🙂

Barry wants health care a done deal before he pays us a visit in a couple of weeks.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs is ratcheting up the pressure on Congress to complete health-care legislation, setting March 18 as the deadline by which a final bill should be passed.

Noting that President Obama leaves that day on a trip to Indonesia, Guam and Australia, Gibbs said on MSNBC’s “Daily Rundown” with Chuck Todd and Savannah Guthrie that “we believe that we’re on schedule, based on our conversations with the speaker and the majority leader, to get something done by then.”
